Wines from the Heart of Italy: Emilia-Romagna

The Riunite winery is located in the north-central region of Italy called Emilia-Romagna, about two hours southwest of Milan. The Emilia-Romagna region-commonly referred to as the "Bread Basket of Italy"-has produced many popular foods like Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, Prosciutto di Parma and Balsamic Vinegar. The locals love their food...and their wine!

What's the Point of Cheese Without Wine?

Ideal growing conditions make Emilia-Romagna one of Italy's largest wine-producing areas. Varietals (meaning the principal grape variety from which the wine is made) such as Lambrusco, Chianti, Sangiovese and Sauvignon are made into wines that are fragrant and straightforward, with just the right amount of acidity to complement the richness of the region's cuisine...in other words, "they're great with food."

These wines also enjoy worldwide recognition. Perhaps the most famous Italian wine after Chianti is Emilia's Lambrusco, a delightful, naturally "frizzante" (light sparkle) wine. The fruitiness and slight effervescence make Lambrusco refreshing and easy to drink, making it especially popular in the United States, Japan and throughout Europe.
